Costco Auto Program vs TrueCar: what you get from each

Costco Auto Program and TrueCar are both free to the buyer and both paid for by dealers. Costco matches you to one approved dealer with a prearranged price. TrueCar shows upfront prices from many certified dealers. Neither negotiates for you, and both usually quote relative to MSRP, so ask every dealer for an itemized out the door total.

Both programs can save you time and give you a reasonable starting number. The catch is in what the number covers and how many dealers are competing for it. This page explains each program as of October 2026, the difference between a price off MSRP and an itemized out the door price, and how to use either one alongside competing written quotes.

How the Costco Auto Program works

You pick a vehicle on Costco's research pages and submit a form. An approved dealer contacts you with a prearranged, no-haggle member price plus any manufacturer incentives that apply. If something looks wrong, Costco Member Advocates can review pricing concerns. Financing, trade-in and add-ons are still yours to sort out with the dealer.

There is no fee beyond your Costco membership, which runs about $65 to $130 a year, according to Capital One's explainer. The same source says dealers pay Costco to participate and that those fees are Costco's only profit from the program. Costco's own page is the Costco Auto Program, which also runs periodic member-only offers on select brands.

How TrueCar works

On TrueCar you configure a car and see upfront prices from TrueCar Certified Dealers, or get a Guaranteed Savings Certificate off MSRP on specific in-stock vehicles. TrueCar's "No Surprises" policy requires dealers to disclose non-government fees upfront, as Auto Remarketing reported. TrueCar is free to buyers. Dealers pay per sale or by subscription.

TrueCar also powers many affinity programs, including Consumer Reports Build & Buy, Sam's Club, Navy Federal and PenFed. If you use one of those, you are using the TrueCar dealer network with a different logo. Reviews on Trustpilot include complaints about dealer calls after a search and listed cars that were not on the lot.

Price off MSRP vs itemized out the door

This is the part most buyers miss. A price expressed as a discount off MSRP tells you about one line on the deal. An itemized out the door price tells you what you will actually pay: the selling price, the doc fee, any dealer add-ons, taxes, title and registration. Jalopnik's comparison of Costco, TrueCar, brokers and concierges notes that program prices are "fair" rather than the best available and that out the door totals are often missing.

Here is a hypothetical example with round numbers. Two dealers have the same $40,000 car.

Line (hypothetical)Dealer ADealer B
Advertised discount off MSRP$2,000$1,400
Selling price$38,000$38,600
Dealer add-on package$1,300$0
Doc fee$900$500
Total before tax and registration$40,200$39,100

Dealer A has the bigger discount and the worse deal by $1,100. Taxes usually make the gap a bit wider. Doc fees alone vary a lot by state: CarEdge's dealer-quote data reports an average of $973 in Florida, which has no cap, and a $398 cap in Ohio, according to its State of Dealer Fees report. State rules change, so check your state's current rule. Our guide to what an out the door price includes and the out the door calculator cover each line.

Single-dealer matching and why it matters

Costco sends you to one approved dealer. That dealer knows it is the only Costco dealer in the conversation, and the price was set in advance. There is no second dealer pushing the number down. TrueCar shows more dealers, but each price is a posted number, not a bid against the others.

Competition is what moves a price. When several dealers know they are quoting the same car to the same buyer in writing, and the best number gets shown to the rest, the low quote tends to get lower. Neither program is built to run that second round. That is not a flaw if you value a fixed price and a short visit. It does mean the program price is a floor to beat, not a finish line.

How to use Costco or TrueCar alongside competing quotes

  1. Get the program price in writing. Ask the Costco dealer or the TrueCar dealer for the full, itemized out the door total on a specific stock number, not just the member price or the certificate.
  2. Ask other dealers for the same thing. Email several franchised dealers for an itemized out the door price on the same trim and options. Our email negotiation guide has the wording.
  3. Compare totals, not discounts. Line the quotes up on total to your driveway, including any delivery cost. Watch for add-ons; our dealer add-ons guide explains which ones you can refuse.
  4. Send the best number back. Give the other dealers a chance to beat the lowest written total.
  5. Keep financing and trade-in separate. Get a credit union or bank pre-approval first and get trade-in offers on their own, so neither muddies the car price.

That is also what SnagMyCar does for you, for $499, in Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Delaware, Vermont, Wyoming and Idaho. A written Costco or TrueCar out the door quote is a good benchmark to bring: if we don't beat the best written out the door quote you already have, your $99 deposit is refunded and you pay nothing. Questions

Is the Costco Auto Program price negotiable?

Costco describes its member price as prearranged and no-haggle, so the matched dealer is not expected to bargain. You can still ask other dealers for written, itemized out the door quotes on the same car and compare. If another dealer comes in lower on total, you have a real choice. Treat the Costco price as a benchmark, not a ceiling.

Does TrueCar show the out the door price?

Not always. TrueCar shows upfront prices or a savings certificate off MSRP, and its No Surprises policy requires dealers to disclose non-government fees upfront. Jalopnik notes that out the door totals are often missing from program prices. Ask the dealer for an itemized total on a specific stock number, including doc fee, add-ons, taxes and registration.

Why are Costco and TrueCar free to use?

Because dealers pay for them. Capital One's explainer says dealers pay Costco to participate, and TrueCar charges dealers per sale or by subscription, as of October 2026. Free to you does not mean neutral. The programs are built to send you to participating dealers at a set price, not to make those dealers bid against each other.

Can I use a Costco or TrueCar quote with SnagMyCar's guarantee?

Yes, if it is a written, itemized out the door quote for the same car. Our guarantee says that if we don't beat the best written out the door quote you already have, your $99 deposit is refunded and you pay nothing. A member price or a certificate off MSRP alone won't work as a benchmark, so ask the dealer to put the full total in writing first.

Do Costco or TrueCar help with financing and trade-ins?

Not directly. With both programs you still handle financing, trade-in and add-ons with the dealer. Some TrueCar-powered programs, such as PenFed and Navy Federal, pair the dealer network with their own loans. A credit union or bank pre-approval and separate trade-in offers keep those numbers from blurring the price of the car.
