Car broker service for Ohio buyers

SnagMyCar serves new-car buyers who live in Ohio. We contact every franchised dealer in your chosen radius that has your exact car in stock, get itemized out the door prices in writing, push the best one back for a second round, and list them side by side. You pay $499 in total, and nobody from a dealership calls you.

Does Ohio require a car broker license?

Ohio's dealer licensing law, R.C. 4517.02, requires a license for people who display or sell new vehicles at retail, sell used vehicles, or arrange leases. The definitions in R.C. 4517.01 do not include a broker category, and we found no rule that bans brokering. Our understanding is that a buyer's agent paid by the consumer, who never sells, displays or takes title to a car, falls outside that licensing requirement. This is our reading, not legal advice, and no Ohio agency has reviewed SnagMyCar.

Two Ohio details shape how we operate. First, R.C. 4517.20 restricts dealers from paying commissions to anyone other than their own salespeople. We never accept money from dealers in any state, so that rule lines up with how we already work. Second, the leasing language in 4517.02 covers arranging for another person to use a vehicle. We handle new-car purchases only at launch and do not arrange leases.

Ohio's doc fee cap changes where the money is

Ohio is one of the states that caps dealer documentation fees. CarEdge reports the Ohio cap at $398 in its dealer fee report, against a national average doc fee of $477 in the same data. That figure comes from a competitor's report, and state rules change, so confirm the current cap with the state before you count on it.

A cap matters because it moves the fight. When a dealer cannot raise the doc fee, the room for extra profit sits in the selling price, in dealer-installed add-ons, and in the finance office. That is where we focus. Every quote we collect must list each charge separately, so a store that adds a protection package or a "market adjustment" has that line in plain view next to stores that do not. Our page on doc fees by state shows how Ohio compares with uncapped states, and the add-ons guide explains the extras worth questioning.

Sales tax is based on where you live

Ohio's statewide sales tax rate is 5.75 percent, and counties add their own permissive rate on top. For a vehicle purchase, the tax generally follows the county where you live, not the county where the dealer sits, so a Columbus buyer who picks up in Dayton still pays the Franklin County rate. Check current rates with the Ohio Department of Taxation, since local rates can change.

This is useful when you compare quotes. Because your tax rate is the same no matter which Ohio dealer wins, the difference between two quotes from different counties comes down to selling price, fees and add-ons. If a dealer's quote shows the wrong county rate, we flag it before you see the comparison.

Ohio dealer markets and how wide to search

Ohio has several large metro areas spread across the state: Cleveland and Akron in the northeast, Columbus in the middle, Cincinnati and Dayton in the southwest, and Toledo in the northwest. Buyers in or near those metros can often reach several same-brand dealers within an hour, which gives a second round of bidding real teeth. Buyers in the Appalachian southeast or the rural west of the state may want a wider radius to get the same competition.

A wider radius only helps if the drive is worth it. Next to every quote we show an estimated cost to pick the car up or have it delivered, then add it to the out the door price. As a hypothetical, say a dealer two hours away comes in $600 lower than your closest store and pickup costs about $150 in time and fuel. That farther store still wins by about $450, and the list makes that plain.

None of the states around Ohio are on our served list right now. If you live near Cincinnati, Toledo or the Ohio River and a store across the line has the car, the out of state buying guide explains how tax and registration work when the dealer is not in Ohio.

Getting financing in Ohio without the markup

We do not sell loans or take referral fees from lenders. Our advice is the same everywhere: get a written pre-approval from an Ohio credit union or your bank before your quotes come back, then give the finance office a chance to beat it. Dealers can add a markup to the rate a lender offers them; lenders commonly cap that markup at about 2 to 2.5 percentage points, according to Auto Finance News. A pre-approval in your pocket is the simplest way to see whether you are being offered a marked-up rate.

What to bring to an Ohio dealer at pickup

After you pick a quote, the winning dealer sends a buyer's order at that exact number. We check it, and only when it matches do we charge the $400 success fee. Then you finish the purchase with the dealer.

  1. Your Ohio driver's license.
  2. Proof of insurance on the new car. Call your agent with the VIN before you go.
  3. Your loan pre-approval, or the payment method the dealer agreed to accept.
  4. The title for any trade-in, plus your lender's payoff letter if you still owe on it.
  5. The buyer's order we approved, printed or on your phone.

In Ohio, dealers process the title for a new car through a county clerk of courts title office, so you usually leave with temporary tags while the title is issued. Before you sign, read the retail contract against the approved buyer's order: selling price, doc fee, tax rate and every add-on. Inspect the car for scratches and confirm the VIN. If anything differs from what we approved, stop and contact us before you sign.

Price and guarantee

You pay a $99 deposit to start and a $400 success fee only after the dealer's buyer's order matches the price you picked. If we do not beat the best written out the door quote you already have, the $99 comes back to you. Read the full terms on the pricing page, see each round on how it works, or check whether a service fits you in is a car broker worth it.

Questions

Is it legal to use a car broker in Ohio?

Ohio licenses people who display or sell vehicles or arrange leases under R.C. 4517.02, and we found no broker category or ban on brokering. Our understanding is that a consumer-paid agent who never sells or takes title to a car does not need that license. This is our reading, not legal advice. We also take no dealer money, which matters because R.C. 4517.20 restricts dealer commissions.

What is the doc fee cap in Ohio?

CarEdge reports Ohio caps the dealer documentation fee at $398. That number comes from a competitor report and state rules change, so confirm the current cap with the state. Even with a cap, dealers can add profit through the selling price, add-ons and financing, which is why we compare complete out the door totals.

Do I pay sales tax based on the dealer location in Ohio?

Generally no. Ohio vehicle sales tax follows the county where you live, using the 5.75 percent state rate plus your county rate. That means quotes from dealers in different Ohio counties should show the same tax for you, and the real differences come down to price, fees and add-ons. Check current rates with the Ohio Department of Taxation.

Can SnagMyCar help me lease a car in Ohio?

Not right now. We handle new-car purchases only at launch. Ohio law also treats arranging leases as licensed activity, so we do not arrange leases. If you plan to lease, our service is not the right fit today, though you can still use our guides to check an out the door number.

How far should an Ohio buyer set the search radius?

Near Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton or Toledo, an hour often reaches several same-brand dealers. In rural parts of the state, a wider radius brings more competition. Each quote shows an estimated pickup or delivery cost so you can judge whether a farther store is worth the trip.
