Questions

Which new SUVs have a 5-star NHTSA rating?

Every SUV listed under 5-star SUVs on this page holds a 5 of 5 overall rating from NHTSA for its most recent rated model year. 96 of the 346 models we track currently have an overall NHTSA rating. Open any model for the frontal, side and rollover scores and the source.

How often is this data updated?

We refresh it from NHTSA and the EPA regularly, and each car page shows which model year a rating or figure applies to. New ratings and recalls are published by the agencies at any time, so check the official source on the day you buy.

Is a car with more recalls a worse car?

Not necessarily. Recalls mean a defect was found and is being fixed for free, and brands that recall proactively can show higher counts. What matters for you is that every open recall on your specific VIN is completed before you take delivery.
