The main TrueCar alternatives are the Costco Auto Program, paid negotiators such as CarEdge, Delivrd, Automatch and SnagMyCar, AI email agents, and asking dealers for quotes yourself. Skip Consumer Reports Build & Buy, Sam's Club, Navy Federal and PenFed if you want something different: those run on TrueCar's dealer network.
The right alternative depends on why TrueCar didn't work for you. Some people want fewer dealer calls. Some want a real out the door number instead of a discount off MSRP. Some want someone to push the price down rather than read it off a screen. The table below sorts the options by who pays, what it costs you and whether you end up with competing written quotes. Prices and terms are as of October 2026 and link to each company's own page.

Why look past TrueCar
TrueCar is free because dealers pay it, per sale or by subscription. That is the same model behind the Costco program. Jalopnik describes the resulting prices as "fair" rather than the best and notes that out the door totals are often missing. Reviews on Trustpilot mention dealer calls after a search and listed cars that were not on the lot. None of that makes TrueCar useless. It is a quick way to see a reasonable number. It just isn't built to make dealers compete.
The TrueCar-powered programs
Several well-known buying programs are TrueCar underneath. Consumer Reports Build & Buy says TrueCar operates its dealer network and site. Sam's Club, Navy Federal and PenFed run on the same network, and PenFed pairs it with its own loan rates. These programs can add a member perk or a financing discount, but the dealer pricing comes from the same place. If TrueCar's approach is what you want to avoid, these won't change much.
Costco Auto Program
Costco is the most common alternative and the simplest. You submit a form, and one approved dealer contacts you with a prearranged member price plus incentives. You still handle financing, trade-in and add-ons. The single-dealer match means no competition, so treat the Costco price as a starting point. We compare the two in detail in Costco Auto Program vs TrueCar.
Paid human negotiators
The flat-fee negotiators charge between $499 and $1,000 and put a person in charge of the deal. Delivrd ($1,000) and CarEdge Concierge ($999) are the best known; we compare them in Delivrd vs CarEdge. Car Concierge Pro charges $998 and also handles leases. Automatch Consulting, run by Jalopnik columnist Tom McParland, charges $499 for Premium and $599 for Platinum and covers new cars, used cars and leases, which makes it a strong option if you need one of those.
Read refund terms closely. Delivrd's fee is non-refundable once work begins. Car Concierge Pro offers a 30-day money-back guarantee with exclusions, including deals "in line with market pricing," per its pricing guide. We found no refund or guarantee terms on Automatch's homepage.
AI email agents
AI agents are the cheapest paid route. CarEdge's agent creates a throwaway email and phone number and contacts nearby dealers for itemized out the door prices. CarWhere's agent emails dealers from a private alias. Both have you approve messages. CarEdge's own guide on whether AI can negotiate a car deal says AI is weaker at the final step and that AI plus a human closes deals. Good for collecting opening quotes; expect to close yourself.
Doing it yourself
The free alternative is the one dealers least enjoy: email several franchised dealers, ask each for an itemized out the door price on a specific stock number, then send the lowest written total back to the others. Consumer Reports recommends the same basics: get quotes from multiple dealers, negotiate price apart from trade-in and financing, avoid negotiating on monthly payment, and be willing to walk away. Our guide on negotiating an out the door price by email has templates, and broker vs negotiating yourself helps you decide whether the time is worth it.
Where SnagMyCar fits
SnagMyCar does the do-it-yourself method for you, at scale. We email every matching in-stock car at franchised dealers in your radius, send the best written number back for a second round, and give the top two a final call. In about 3 to 4 days you get itemized out the door quotes side by side, with estimated pickup or delivery cost added. You pick, the dealer sends a buyer's order at that number, and we check it matches before the $400 success fee is charged. If we don't beat the best written out the door quote you already have, your $99 is refunded.
We are a fit for new cars in Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Delaware, Vermont, Wyoming and Idaho. We don't handle used cars, leases or trade-ins at launch, and we can't help with direct-sale brands like Tesla, Rivian, Lucid or Polestar, which sell at fixed prices. If you need any of those, Automatch, Car Concierge Pro or CarEdge may suit you better. Compare more options in our best car buying services roundup, check pricing, or start your search.
Questions
Is Consumer Reports Build & Buy different from TrueCar?
Not much under the hood. Consumer Reports says TrueCar operates the Build & Buy dealer network and site. Participating dealers may add a small member discount, but the pricing comes from the same network. The same is true of the Sam's Club, Navy Federal and PenFed programs, which run on TrueCar.
What is the cheapest TrueCar alternative?
Emailing dealers yourself costs nothing but time. Among paid options as of October 2026, AI agents are cheapest: CarEdge lists its AI Buying Agent at $49.99 per search in beta, and CarWhere charges $34.99 a month. Human negotiators run from $499 at Automatch and SnagMyCar to about $1,000 at CarEdge Concierge and Delivrd.
Which TrueCar alternative avoids dealer calls?
Services that contact dealers for you keep your number out of it. CarEdge's AI agent uses a throwaway email and phone number, CarWhere emails from a private alias, and SnagMyCar has dealers deal with us until you choose one. With Costco and TrueCar, dealers contact you directly after you submit a request.
Which alternatives help with used cars or leases?
Automatch Consulting says it covers new, pre-owned and leases, and Car Concierge Pro lists buy, lease or finance at $998, as of October 2026. SnagMyCar is new cars only at launch. If you need a used car or a lease, start with a service that says it handles them and confirm the details before paying.
Are AI car buying agents worth trying?
For collecting opening quotes, they can be. They email many dealers quickly and cost far less than a human. CarEdge's own guide says AI is weaker at the final step and that AI plus a human closes deals. Plan to review every quote yourself and to handle the close, or pair the AI quotes with a service or your own follow-up.
