A car buying service for engineers who want the method

For engineers, SnagMyCar is a defined process with a clear objective: the lowest written, itemized out the door price on the exact car you specify. We query every matching franchised dealer in your radius, run three bidding rounds by email, and show you the raw quotes line by line. You choose, and we verify the buyer's order before you sign.

The problem, stated precisely

Buying a new car from a dealer is a negotiation with hidden variables. The selling price is one input. Add-ons, market adjustments, doc fees, trade-in values and loan terms are others, and a dealer can move value between them. Cut the selling price a little and raise the add-ons by the same amount, and the buyer feels like they won.

The fix is to choose the right objective function. The number that matters is the out the door price: everything you pay the dealer to drive away, including taxes and fees. If you hold the car constant and compare out the door totals, most of the tricks stop working, because there is nowhere left to hide the money. Our guide to the out the door price goes through each component.

The method, step by step

The full write-up is on our how it works page. Here it is as a spec.

Inputs

  • Make, model and trim, or a configurator build code for a factory order
  • Acceptable exterior and interior colors, ranked
  • Required options and packages, and exclusions
  • Search radius in miles from your home
  • Pickup or delivery
  • Your best existing written out the door quote, if you have one

Process

  1. Candidate set. We find every matching car in stock at franchised dealers inside your radius. Each request references a specific vehicle, so quotes are for real units.
  2. Round 1, about 36 hours. Each dealer gets the same email asking for a written, itemized out the door price.
  3. Round 2, about 24 hours. We send the best written number back to the other dealers and ask them to beat it.
  4. Final call, about 12 hours. The top two dealers get one last chance.
  5. Output. You get a side by side table of every written quote, plus an estimated pickup or delivery cost on each, so the comparison is total to your driveway.

Verification

You pick a quote. We tell the winning dealer, and the dealer sends a buyer's order at that exact number. We check the buyer's order against the quote before you sign. If something drifted, such as an added package or a changed fee, it gets flagged and corrected before money moves. Think of it as a diff between the agreed spec and the delivered document.

What a quote contains

Every quote is normalized into the same fields, so you are comparing like with like:

FieldWhy it is broken out
Vehicle identifierTies the quote to one physical car, usually by stock number or VIN
Selling price relative to stickerShows the actual discount or markup on the car itself
Market adjustmentA separate line, so a markup cannot hide inside the selling price
Dealer add-onsEach item listed, so you can reject anything you did not request
Doc feeVaries by dealer and by state, sometimes capped
Tax, title and registrationMostly driven by where you live, not by the dealer
Out the door totalThe objective value we rank on
Pickup or delivery estimateYour cost to get the car home, added for a fair comparison

If you want to check the math yourself, run any quote through our out the door calculator. Our guide to dealer doc fees by state covers the fee most people overlook.

Why competition beats a single negotiation

Negotiating with one dealer is a bilateral game where the dealer knows its cost, its incentives and its inventory pressure, and you know none of it. Running written bids across every matching dealer changes the structure. Each dealer now knows a competitor has put a number in writing, and the only way to win is to beat it. You do not need to know any dealer's cost. The market reveals a clearing price for that specific car.

Written matters. Verbal numbers on the phone drift. A written, itemized quote is an artifact you can compare, store and hold a dealer to. That is also why we keep dealers off your phone: everything that happens in the bidding is in writing, so there is a record.

Constraints and known limitations

An honest spec includes its edge cases:

  • Tight constraints shrink the candidate set. If you will only accept one color with one package, fewer dealers can bid, and less competition generally means less movement. Ranking a second color is the easiest way to widen the pool.
  • Direct-sale brands are out of scope. Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and Polestar sell at one set price with no competing dealers, so there is nothing for us to run.
  • New cars only. Used cars and leasing are not offered at launch. They may come later, with no date promised.
  • Eight states. We serve Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Delaware, Vermont, Wyoming and Idaho. Many states regulate or ban car buying agents, so everyone else is on a waitlist.
  • Financing is a separate variable. We do not arrange loans. Get a credit union or bank pre-approval first and make the dealer beat that rate. Keeping the loan out of the price negotiation stops the dealer from trading one against the other.

Factory orders and specific builds

Engineers often know exactly what they want down to the package code, and the right car is not always on a lot. For a factory order, you send the configurator build code or summary. Instead of searching inventory, we email that brand's dealers in your radius and ask each for a written quote on your exact build: price relative to sticker, any market adjustment, deposit and refund terms, and estimated delivery timing. The same applies to luxury and exotic brands sold through US dealers.

Time cost and incentives

Your time input is one form at the start, one decision after about 3 to 4 days, and one signing. No dealership visits to shop, and none at all if the dealer delivers to your home or office. Delivery can be arranged with the dealer, and we compare its cost against pickup.

Check the incentive structure of any service you use. Ours is simple. We are paid only by you, a flat $499, and we take no money from dealers or lenders. You pay $99 at signup and $400 only after the dealer's buyer's order matches the price you picked. If we don't beat the best written out the door quote you already have, the $99 is refunded and you pay nothing. Because the fee is flat, we have no reason to prefer one dealer or one price level over another. Full terms are on the pricing page. Our comparison of a car broker versus negotiating yourself lays out when doing it yourself is the better trade.

Questions

What exactly do you rank the quotes on?

The written out the door total for the exact car you specified, with an estimated pickup or delivery cost alongside it so the comparison is total to your driveway. We rank on that total, not on the selling price alone, because a low selling price can be offset by add-ons, a market adjustment or a high doc fee further down the quote.

Do I see the raw quotes or only your recommendation?

You see every written quote, normalized into the same fields: vehicle identifier, selling price relative to sticker, market adjustment, each add-on, doc fee, tax and government fees, out the door total and the pickup or delivery estimate. You pick. We do not choose for you, and we have no financial reason to prefer one dealer, because dealers pay us nothing.

How do you verify the final paperwork?

After you pick a quote, the winning dealer sends a buyer's order at that exact number. We compare it line by line with the quote you chose before you sign. If anything changed, such as an added package or a different fee, it gets flagged and corrected first. The $400 success fee is charged only once the buyer's order matches.

Does narrowing my options hurt the result?

It can. Every constraint, such as a single acceptable color or a rare package, shrinks the set of dealers able to bid, and fewer bidders usually means less competition. Ranking a second acceptable color or widening the radius are the simplest ways to bring more dealers in. For a very specific build, a factory order may work better than in-stock inventory.

Why not just email dealers myself?

You can, and our guide to negotiating the out the door price by email shows how. The trade is time. You would need to find every matching car, write to each dealer, normalize their replies, run a second round and field the calls. Our flat $499 covers that work, and the $99 deposit is refunded if we don't beat your best written quote.
